Here's the trailer for the new Resident Evil movie, and boy does t look ...odd? I don't even know what the hell this one is about, but it certainly looks alot better than the other two special effects wise. Maybe thats because the dude that directed Highlander is taking over. You know, because there can be only one and stuff.

It looks more promising than I expected it to. Dare I say even more...professional than the other two? Still, I did get a WTF feeling from the trailer, considering the very minimal lack of Resident Evil-esque creatures. Imagine, though, when it comes out on dvd, how head-explodingly awesome an RE movie marathon would be.
Holy crap, that'd be awesome. In that drunken gun fight way. But I still can't figure out why zombies in Vegas would cause a snadstorm large enugh to bury the city. That concept is completely lost on me. Whatever.
As for the sandstorm, I a few ideas- the T-Virus may have been carried by it? It's logical enough for this sort of movie.
The setting and events could be either completely non-canon, but I have a few suggestions:
Resident Evil 4 told us that basically all of the zombies died out in a few weeks. All of the Resident Evil games took place during this time. Code Veronica featured genetic monstrosities instead of direct zombies, so- Res Evil 0-3 are within that two week timeframe.
Resident Evil 4 takes place about a year or two after the other games, I believe. There is a considerable time gap to explain in the continuity of the games. For example, how zombies died out. Perhaps this is what the movie sets out to explain; the first movie details the way in which the virus was released. Perhaps Extinction shows out it dies out.
The Umbrella satellite could very well be Wesker spying on Vegas as movie events play out, as he is still around in Res 4 as a shadowy third party evil guy who fucks with you, sort of.
Then again, and probably true regardless of the premises I just noted, dead Vegas is most likely an excuse to have a zombie western.
Those ideas are pretty solid. I was thinking more along the lines that they blew up Vegas like they blew up Raccoon City at the end of RE 3 and the last movie. They should have let us write this shit.
